Hydraulic calcs in the studio

What you'll learn: running hydraulic calculations on the system you drew — demand at the remote area, checked against your water supply, reported for the AHJ.

Set up the calculation

  1. Define the remote area over your layout and the design criteria: density and area for your hazard — including residential design bases (NFPA 13 residential, 13R, and 13D criteria are built in).
  2. Enter the water supply from your flow test: static, residual, and flow.

Run and read

  1. The solver works the system you actually drew — real pipe lengths, fittings, and elevations from the model, not a hand abstraction.
  2. Read the result the way a reviewer will: demand point vs. supply curve, and the pressure margin between them.
  3. Generate the calculation report for the calc package (lesson A5 packages it).
Margin is your friend: pair the result with the Supply Safety Margin idea from the preliminary calc tool — knowing your cushion as a percentage of supply is how you defend the design when the water company's numbers drift.
